KILILMANJARO
KILIMANJARO CLIMBING
Mount Kilimanjaro is the crown of Tanzania, rising abruptly from the open plains, capped by snow and frequently fringed by clouds. At an elevation of 19,344 feet, it is the highest mountain in Africa as well as the only free-standing mountain in the world. Mt. Kilimanjaro can be reached without hand-over-hand climbing, making it a feasible hike for those with little or no climbing experience. Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano, however, ominous rumbles can sometimes be heard and gases emerge from fume holes in the crater. Despite being just three degrees south of the equator, the peaks of the mountain are home to snow caps year round.
There are several climbing trails; they pass through the lush rainforests and giant lobelia and huge cactus-like plant-filled vegetation. Once you’ve hiked through and above the forest, there is an almost lunar landscape. The saddle that stretches between the two peaks KIBO and Mawenzi. The highest point on Kibo, and indeed the entire continent of Africa, is Uhuru Peak, with spectacular glaciers and stupendous views of the plains.
With the help of porters and a guide, it is possible to walk all the way to the summit of Kibo without specialised mountaineering equipment or experience. Kilimanjaro can be conquered by any reasonably fit person. The entire climb typically takes five to six to seven days and involves five or six overnight stays in mountain huts or tents. Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is an expedition of a lifetime; a world heritage site and wonder of Africa.
